Maintaining Block Work Through the Seasons

Check the drainage before winter

On retaining walls, the weep holes and drain outlets are the parts that matter. Before the rainy season, clear any soil, mulch, or plant growth blocking them so water behind the wall can escape. A wall that can’t drain is a wall under pressure it wasn’t designed for.

Seal and patch the finish

Stucco and mortar are porous. A breathable masonry sealer every few years slows water intrusion and keeps efflorescence — the white mineral bloom — to a minimum. Patch hairline stucco cracks early with an elastomeric filler; they’re cosmetic when small and a water path when ignored.

Watch for movement

Once a year, sight down the wall. New leaning, a course that’s stepped out of line, or cracking that follows the block pattern in a stair-step means something is moving — usually water or soil pressure. Caught early it’s often a drainage fix; left alone it becomes a rebuild.
